Name: Philip Chang

Job title and description: I’m co-founder of Carbon, a publicity and strategic communications firm for Talent. If Winston Wolf was a publicist, that’d describe much of what we do. We work one-on-one with people, products, and services that we believe in to promote and protect their reputations. Who we’ve worked with includes large and small companies - publicly and privately held - as well as high-profile individuals.

You can get to know more about us at strongerbonds.com. My personal site is havephonewilltravel.com.

Why do you love C/FAN?

C/FAN has, each season, become more specific at describing what it means to live in our time. There’s an experience of living well, within C/FAN Designs; the enthusiasm of discovery, by allowing yourself to enjoy where life can take you.

I see C/FAN as a mirror for the style narratives of a person wearing the uniform of their world, at a time when their future is unpaved and open. The opportunity structure for our generation is so different from those before us. We should all be as encouraged by curiosity.

How do you use your envelope sleeve?

In this sleeve is a Macbook Pro, the digital snow globe of my world, so I look for accessories which reflect the way I want the world to view who I am.  When I moved to Chicago, I carried a vintage Louis Vuitton folio. People would look across Michigan Avenue, spot the folio, and know who was carrying it. That’s when I learned a great accessory is its own pitch. It makes people curious enough to want to check you out more.

Electric Lava is a personal color. It signals people to look for a spark. Electric Lava, to me, is really about showing I dare to do daring work, and that I dig what excites people and how they imagine their role in the world. A person’s passions will govern their boundaries, and that, is also when it all goes to hell, so anything I can do to bring out their best is a way of informing me what they are capable of.

Favorite things to do in your spare time (when you have any!):

A large mint chocolate milk shake is the only socially acceptable way of ordering 8 scoops of ice cream in public.

To say the Indiana Hoosiers blew it against Syracuse in last year’s NCAA tournament would be a disservice to Nintendo cartridges.

Being a guardian angel to my 6-year-old friend Jack Jack. He’s a city kid who loves his dog Brennan, Oz Park, Star Wars, LEGOs, Star Wars LEGOs, and above all else, he adores his momma. I love exploring his world.

Where do you like to get work done outside of the office?

Who isn’t enchanted by the smell of a coffee shop (my props to Chicago’s Bow Truss), although for me, it doesn’t get better than the museum. Art, science, and history teach me to see things in ways I hadn’t thought of before, through the ways other people see them.

Being able to do this is critical in any relationship business, especially PR. Tommy Mottola, the former CEO of Sony Music, said it better, though. “You have to understand what’s in other people’s minds. At the end of the day, that’s all they care about.” True story.

Celebrating #CokeBday with a case of “Hecho en Mexico.” Happy 127th! True story, my grandfather was born the same year Coke was invented. Although in his case, he was “Made in Taiwan.”

Ahhh. This is great. The time of year where every girl on the bus starts staring at other girls. The judging begins! Outfits, styles, handbags, sunglasses (which I’m basically the only one that doesn’t wear them so it kind of creeps me out and I feel like I’m sitting with 80 zombies without any sort of facial expressions). Go to it ladies. Time to outdo each other!
